In and out of digital space, young people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community have found a profound exploration of their identity, presence, and reality. Such is the case in their journey of coming out of these spaces, a phenomenon that is more encouraged than ever and proves the existence of an increasingly blurry line between the physical and the digital. The demands of the online and offline worlds have become of equal importance that new ways of coming out have emerged to give justice to the selves that they present or that people perceive in these realms.
The exhibit, IN/OUT, explores the issues raised by this ongoing oscillation between physical and digital space, bringing the self-identifying imprints of young people’s digital interactions back into their physical lives and vice versa. The scene is set in the expo room of Kavka Oudaan, which has been transformed into a queer techno club with a rave at the forefront. Viewers are invited to celebrate the energy of both tension and flow that characterize the dynamics of the two worlds, now becoming one, coming from a coming out of identities featured in the show: two young queer artists residing in Belgium, made manifest in their mixed-media pieces, and four queer personalities whose self-disclosure stories reveal around the room.
Artist Description:
Yavor Chokoev is a Bulgarian poet, prosaist, visual artist and proud member of the International Vladimir Nabokov Society, currently living in Belgium. A writer since only 6 years old, he has won a variety of literary competitions, has been published by Bulgarian literature magazines, and has had performances and appearances on both national radio and TV.
Violetta Brown is an Argentine/Italian/British artist currently studying printmaking in Antwerp, with prior experience in studying sculpture. As a result of switching from 3D art to 2D, Violetta likes to use found objects or materials people wouldn’t commonly associate with drawing within her practice. Violetta’s most recent works take inspiration from the imagery of folklore and mixing them with a skewed image of the world around her, turning everything into a characture of itself, as for her that is a more accurate depiction of what she sees.
Curator:
Sam Domingo is a researcher, theatre practitioner, curator, and artist based in Leuven, Belgium. Born and raised in the Philippines, she creates literary pieces such as essays, poems and plays, and other creative works that have reached more territories than her two feet. Her writings were featured in various projects and literary journals in North America, Europe, South America, Asia, and Australia, some of which were made for the Venice Biennale, Ujazdowski Castle Center for Contemporary Art, TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art, Karne Kunst, Cordite Poetry Review, Sing Lit Station, and Lampara Publishing.
