KOBRA X TO BE ANTWERP

KOBRA X TO BE ANTWERP
Kobra is a project that coordinates the visual arts program of Kavka vzw, by supporting young artists and artist collectives – no matter what kind of background or experience they have – and by helping them organise their own projects. This is the fourth edition of To Be Antwerp in which Kavka partakes and in which we are proud to present an amazing and very diverse group of young artists that graduated in the crazy year of 2020.

TO BE ANTWERP 2020 | WINDOW EXPO WALK
Each year, To Be Antwerp organises an art route with exhibitions in de Theaterbuurt (the ‘theatre area’ of Antwerp) of the graduates of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and St. Lucas School of Arts Antwerp. Covid-19 has blocked a lot of opportunities for these young artists in 2020 and to be able to still go through with the exhibition walk, To Be vzw and all of the participants of this event will present the work of the artists behind their windows. The audience can enjoy the exhibitions from the outside looking in. The window walk exhibition of To Be Antwerp 2020 will start Friday November 27 and closes December 11.
At Kavka there will be a different exhibition every 5 days (each time with an interval of a day to make the switch to the next exhibition) and there will be an additional week of exhibition (until the 19th of December) to be able to present all 9 artists and the 5 additional performers that normally would have been gathered into one big exhibition throughout the entire Kavka building.
You can find the map with all the locations and the art route on at www.tobeantwerp.com from the 25th of November.

✘ Birthe Janssens | @birthe.janssens | Illustration (expo) / Children’s book (projection) | Individuo
Individuo arose from the research question of how a tough subject such as dementia can be portrayed in a colourful way, without form and content turning it into being cliché. According to Janssens, characters in children’s books who live with dementia are too often simply type casted as ‘demented people’. Through Individuo she wants to focus on the unique personality (individu) that each person with dementia has and on their loved ones that stand by them (duo). This resulted into a book that contains 5 illustrated short stories, made up out of risograph prints and a print screen book cover.

✘ Anke Huntjens | @ankehuntjens | Installation (expo) | Cloud
Huntjens describes herself as a DIY artist who acquired her technical skills through YouTube and who (re)uses found material and objects to create installations. In the making process she first creates chaos to afterwards find structure within. Huntjens embraces being a woman and her creations show her interpretation of life and the world she lives in as seen through the eyes of a woman. In her opinion, art is able to enthrall and engage people, to make people feel connected and start up conversations. She therefore invites people in on her endless, dynamic journey to self-knowledge and -awareness. Instead of upholding generally accepted standards for women, Huntjens wants to question and challenge them, as they have such a big formative influence on the identity of a woman. The themes of her works are for example anticonception, hormonal identity and social openness, that define ‘femininity and that often involve a sense of shame. The installation ‘Cloud’ is a prime example thereof, having a clear reference to nature, and in contradiction a very direct visual and ironic confrontation with the taboo subject of menstruation and anticonception. The IUD’s and cloud, made out of plastic, also refer to our throw-away society and to apps used to keep track of one’s menstruation cycle in an online cloud, turning a woman’s menstruation into a commercialized object and gathering its data all over the world. Huntjens wants to question the purpose of these practices and examine the effects that they might have on a woman’s identity.
