KOBRA X TO BE ANTWERP

Kobra is a project that coordinates the visual arts program of Kavka vzw, by supporting young artists and artist collectives – no matter what kind of background or experience they have – and by helping them organise their own projects. This is the fourth edition of To Be Antwerp in which Kavka partakes and in which we are proud to present an amazing and very diverse group of young artists that graduated in the crazy year of 2020.

TO BE ANTWERP 2020 | WINDOW EXPO WALK

Each year, To Be Antwerp organises an art route with exhibitions in de Theaterbuurt (the ’theatre area’ of Antwerp) of the graduates of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and St. Lucas School of Arts Antwerp. Covid-19 has blocked a lot of opportunities for these young artists in 2020 and to be able to still go through with the exhibition walk, To Be vzw and all of the participants of this event will present the work of the artists behind their windows. The audience can enjoy the exhibitions from the outside looking in. The window walk exhibition of To Be Antwerp 2020 will start Friday November 27 and closes December 11.

At Kavka there will be a different exhibition every 5 days (each time with an interval of a day to make the switch to the next exhibition) and there will be an additional week of exhibition (until the 19th of December) to be able to present all 9 artists and the 5 additional performers that normally would have been gathered into one big exhibition throughout the entire Kavka building.

You can find the map with all the locations and the art route on at www.tobeantwerp.com from the 25th of November.

✘ Romy Streep | @romystreep | Sculpture (expo) | To Be

Experimenting with volume, form and texture and with a preference for the materials clay and textile, Romy Streep created in playful ways a series of fragile art works. The kind of tactility and fragility that the material which she chooses to work with possesses, is something that she has a fascination for. Although to some of these works a layer of glaze is added, she doesn’t apply it to every piece, because as such, they make a more pure impression by leaving the material’s ‘skin’ uncovered. Unavoidably, Covid-19 also had a big influence on the inspiration for and the production of the works that she made in her final master’s year. As she lost general access to certain facilities (for example an oven for making tapestries with ceramic frameworks), she had to adapt to the situation, which made her focus centralize on the design of her tapestries. Another inspiring factor during this time, was joining her father in the maintenance of their bonsai garden, which made her love for fauna and flora grow, in particular for flowers and the relationship that people have with flowers. Studying this relationship and how to transform this into a language of her own, by using wool and a tufting gun, it consequently became the central theme of her latest work.

✘ Daheng Liu | @dahengliu | Costume design / Performance (projection) | I made a world for myself, you’re nearly there. It’s fantastic!

For his master project, Daheng Liu explored the different perspectives of ‘Yijing’ in Eastern and Western performing arts and applied it to design. As an aesthetic system of immersive experience, Yijing is an important expression found in the exploration of self-identity. Yijing is an aesthetic system and a philosophy in China. It is a completely immersive sensory world, and everyone has their own independent world. It contains a unique feeling produced by people at this moment about their environment, concept and objects around them. The project explores the communication between self-identity and the environment through the body. Daheng therefore focusses on the one hand on the relationship between the body, consciousness and the environment, and on the other hand on physical movements as a medium to explore the impact of the environment on consciousness. Because of the unique sensation of consciousness to the environment and objects it is surrounded by, body movements develop changes accordingly. Daheng makes the spectator explore a new form of the body as a creature and the world in which these creatures live. Its process is divided into three stages: triggers, connection, and fusion. Eventually, an immersive world of consciousness, body and environment is formed. In this world, the creature’s identity calls your consciousness. It is constructed, and the complete self is explained.

✘ Julia Ballardt |@julballardt | Fashion design / Photography (projection) | Catch the Silver I fling / Swansong

The collection of costumes that Julia Ballardt made for her Master’s project fused Punk culture‘s poetic habit of collecting things on wardrobe items together with personal analogue photographs that she has taken over the last years. Print in its various techniques finds its way onto the large surfaces and into the most hidden corners of the garments, showing sentimental but vivid memories. The additional exposure of these images in wooden light boxes takes the audience back to the origin of the collection — to a nostalgic place, where the beholder is able to dive deep into artist’s world.

✘ Nico Verhaegen | @nico_verhaegen | Fashion design / Graphic design (projection) | Swansong

✘ Martha Gardner | @marthaagardner | Dance / Performance (projection) | Swansong

For the corona-edition of her exhibition at Kavka, Julia Ballardt collaborates with Nico Verhaegen and Martha Gardner.

Nico Verhaegen is a fellow graduated master’s student in fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, but he also explores other media like photography, cinematography and visual effects. For To Be Antwerp, both artists joined forces for the filming and directing of this performance.

Martha Gardner is a British dancer and performer, in her final year of studying contemporary dance at The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp. She also has a strong interest in interdisciplinary work across the creative arts, therefore is very excited for this unique collaboration for which she created a choreography inspired by the collection of Julia Ballardt.

This trio eventually created a strong visual performance in which their art work is brought together and infused with new life.
