KOBRA X TO BE ANTWERP
Kobra is a project that coordinates the visual arts program of Kavka vzw, by supporting young artists and artist collectives – no matter what kind of background or experience they have – and by helping them organise their own projects. This is the fourth edition of To Be Antwerp in which Kavka partakes and in which we are proud to present an amazing and very diverse group of young artists that graduated in the crazy year of 2020.

TO BE ANTWERP 2020 | WINDOW EXPO WALK
Each year, To Be Antwerp organises an art route with exhibitions in de Theaterbuurt (the ’theatre area’ of Antwerp) of the graduates of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and St. Lucas School of Arts Antwerp. Covid-19 has blocked a lot of opportunities for these young artists in 2020 and to be able to still go through with the exhibition walk, To Be vzw and all of the participants of this event will present the work of the artists behind their windows. The audience can enjoy the exhibitions from the outside looking in. The window walk exhibition of To Be Antwerp 2020 will start Friday November 27 and closes December 11.
At Kavka there will be a different exhibition every 5 days (each time with an interval of a day to make the switch to the next exhibition) and there will be an additional week of exhibition (until the 19th of December) to be able to present all 9 artists and the 5 additional performers that normally would have been gathered into one big exhibition throughout the entire Kavka building.
You can find the map with all the locations and the art route on at www.tobeantwerp.com from the 25th of November.

✘ Xander Faes | @xanderfaes | Sculpture / Graphite drawings (expo) | Untitled
Although Xander Faes graduated as a sculptor, at the moment he mostly makes graphite drawings that portray figurative scenes, filled with theatrical storytelling elements and tropes. The work originates from a deep fascination with storytelling such as film, scenery, comics, as well as visual fantasy and science fiction. Basing himself on photographic material, he gradually builds up a drawing, and lets it define and redefine itself along the creative process.

✘ Moana Martinho Hortas | @moanahortas | Graphic Design (projection) | I am
Instead of categorising movies into genres, Moana Martinho Hortas, classifies movies by emotion and feelings such as feeling lonely, insecure, independent, strong … This kind of alternative database can assist you in finding a movie that fits how you are feeling at the moment, which can help you deal with your emotions. Movies can give new insights or solutions for problems and make you feel less alone in the situation that you are in. Especially in times like these, when you might feel lonely or down, with the help of this project, you can now easily find some movies that can help you get through this crazy period. Discover the movies at www.iammovies.cargo.site and find extra movie tips on the project’s Instagram page @iam.movies.

✘ Annelies Rasker [HUGO] | @a.rasker | Painting / Performance (projection) | HUGO on a Pedestal, The Announcement of Being an Artist, Quarantine Painting Performance
This projection of HUGO’s work consist of three performance parts, titled: ‘HUGO on a Pedestal’, ‘The Announcement of Being an Artist’ and ‘Quarantine Painting Performance’. HUGO’s practice spans a broad range of media including painting, sculpture, performance and video. HUGO stands for action, play and humour; questioning art and the art world, as well as the art market and art capitalism in today’s money-driven, consumer-based society; and for searching for banality and absurdity in art. The mask and costume used in the performances, have a certain punk content, which gives HUGO strength and the appearance of a fighter. During the live painting performance, HUGO needs music (electronic/hip hop) and dance. He dances and feels that all images flash into his sight and this process is called ‘the flow’. This twenty minute performance compilation is very intense and spontaneous, while HUGO also shows some brutality in his work, as well as a slight sexiness, a touch of humour and self-mockery. He is shameless and playful.
